This project involved renovating a heritage listed set of farm buildings including the original homestead, dairy bails and other farm sheds on this hinterland working farm near Byron Bay. The homestead was purchased by the client in a dilapidated and highly intervened state.  The renovation removed the non-original interventions and transformed the neglected home.  The heritage elements were retained, verandahs reinstated, and by extending outdoor entertaining areas, the home and living on the property was re-imagined. Extensive site master planning was undertaken, rationalising driveways and access points to the house paddock and removing the cattle yards that had taken priority over the house paddock, has now allowed a sense of arrival that’s celebrates and views the heritage buildings on approach, and forms a backdrop where events are now held.

The design focuses on a new outdoor brick firepit/Argentinian BBQ grill, with a secondary living space in an adapted outbuilding connected to the heritage house via a detailed brick floor and fly over roof. New kitchen and bathrooms, complete with an outdoor shower, and amenity. An event area inside the old dairy is refurbished along with new landscaping and fencing.

If the material was available the year the homestead was built, concrete, copper, bricks, timber, tin then it could be used in the renovation.  The commitment to Heritage materials, or materials that would faithfully patina over time were used in a complimentary way.  If the time the renovation was completed is unknown or impossible to determine then we achieved our goal.

The client had a childhood country home – archetypal red tin pyramid roof, lowset timber home with the verandah wrapping 3 sides, this house had the bare bones to recreate this childhood home and memory.
