One Surf occupies an extraordinary beachfront site at Mermaid Beach and reinterprets the classic surf shack with a robust structure exuding a sense of permanence, designed to weather  the harsh environment. While the U-shaped courtyard and pool create a sense of formality and leeward protection, the brief focused on building only what the family’s living rituals required.

Anchored to the foredune with sand-toned handmade brickwork, off form concrete, and a glazed transparent ground plane, the house connects directly to the beach and embraces its corner site location through the use of brick veils that offer privacy and a discreet connection to the street. The home balances intimate spaces with generous entertaining zones, capturing the relaxed essence of coastal life.

The morning ritual of movement to the beach, surfing the break in front of the house, and returning through an open-air showering area to the surf board room and back to the café style kitchen for morning coffee is how our client wanted to live, connected to the land and water. The house’s ground level is designed to open to the sand and blur the delineation between the home and the dune.

Every element is handcrafted in this build, the house captures the beauty of the coastline whilst creating a place that embodies the warmth, texture, and ever-changing environment of a life by the sea.
