This renovated character house in Teneriffe, respects the heritage cottage whilst integrating a complimentary and contemporary extension. The jacaranda tree in the rear yard was a focal point for the house renovation. The tree branches become exquisitely framed by a panoramic window aperture spanning the entire rear of the new living, dining, kitchen area capturing its form and using its natural foliage as a living privacy veil. The myriads of interventions to the house over the 100 years of occupancy were stripped back to the intact remaining character elements , the main challenge to respectfully integrate a contemporary three level architectural home around a modest 1910 cottage.
A new entry has been crafted under the old side verandah roof of the existing structure, which leads you to the large concrete, timber and glass extension that wraps the rear and side edges of the cottage. The balance of old and new elements and the subtle blending of the three storey extension are the real achievements of this architectural intervention.

The childhood memory of climbing a tree is captured in this design, the lounge has a large, glazed wall that forms an aperture and frames the tree’s branches. On the rooftop is literally sitting in the canopy of the tree.
Discovering buried stone walls or old brick footings and celebrating those in the new architecture was rewarding, giving the client a sense of being a custodian of history, while embracing a new modern living.
