This project began assessing options for a heritage corner store which stood on James St, with a small cottage to the rear, set over several levels. Blueprint Architects were instrumental in applying for the town planning application to convert the store into a licensed hotel, to design and renovate the building. Our role extended as co-owners of the business, at Sixes and Sevens which we have operated since 2012. The heritage elements of the façade and cottage are retained whilst a modern pub was inserted over multiple levels.
The main bar and patron areas were prioritised within the timber cottage, extending out on the street corner. A concrete and glass extension to the rear of the cottage houses the new services and back of house elements such as kitchens, cold rooms and toilets leaving the heritage areas to be occupied by patrons. The large beer-garden adjoining expanded the cottage pub, providing multiple hospitality offerings in 2016.

The design includes an old brick fireplace, double story gable roof used as a void over the bar, large beer-garden outdoor bar, designed like a pop up greenhouse in the garden, small cocktail areas, large walnut timber bar top with heritage tile fronts, inclusions of the verandas and street awnings as customer areas all add to variety to the venue. The mix of architecture offering aptly named after the idiom, “of being at sixes and sevens”.
The interiors, branding, the logo, name, furniture, lighting, staff uniforms and menus were all co-ordinated, designed and overviewed by Blueprint architects with a team of creative consultants and suppliers.
Design Parti: The old existing store and house felt like an old prohibition house or public house, and this led to the dark interiors’ warm woods, and heritage tiled bar being inserted into a cottage. The idea of your local pub, being friendly, welcoming, familiar, yet surprisingly elevated. The outdoor beer-garden area engages along james st and offers complete contrast to the hidden cottage pub, purposefully offering alternatives for customers.
